EP-PL/PF Series at a Glance

The EP-PL/PF planetary gearbox — also known as a precision planetary reducer — is the broadest-coverage series in the Korea Ever-Power servo planetary gearbox catalogue. Engineered for general-purpose servo and stepper motor applications, it delivers a balance of accuracy, compactness, and value that makes it the default starting point for machine builders worldwide.

Four frame sizes — EP-PL/PF60, EP-PL/PF80, EP-PL/PF120, and EP-PL/PF160 — cover motor power from 50 W compact steppers to 7,500 W heavy-duty servo drives. One-stage, two-stage, and three-stage configurations provide 22 standard gear ratios from 3:1 through 512:1, all manufactured in our Ansan-si precision gear facility using 5-axis CNC hobbing and grinding processes.

Both round flange (EP-PL) and square flange (EP-PF) output variants share identical internal gear trains, bearings, and seals — the only difference is the output housing geometry. This lets you standardise on one gearbox platform across machines that require different mounting interfaces.

Round Flange vs Square Flange — Which Fits Your Machine?

Both the EP-PL and EP-PF planetary gearbox variants share identical gear trains, bearings, seals, and internal precision. The only difference between these two planetary reducer models is the output housing: EP-PL provides a round bolt-circle flange, while EP-PF provides a square flange. Your choice depends entirely on the mating interface of your machine frame or load mechanism.

EP-PL_PF Series Standard Precision Planetary Gearbox 1

EP-PL — Round Flange
◆ Output face: circular bolt-circle pattern
◆ Centering: spigot (pilot) diameter
◆ Typical use: rotary tables, turntable drives, conveyor rollers
◆ Advantage: easy angular alignment, forgiving on bolt hole tolerances
◆ Industry preference: Japan, Korea, automation OEMs
EP-PF — Square Flange
◆ Output face: square corner-bolt pattern
◆ Centering: square register fit
◆ Typical use: linear motion axes, rack-and-pinion drives, ball-screw mounts
◆ Advantage: anti-rotation by geometry, higher moment resistance
◆ Industry preference: Europe, CNC machine tool builders

Not sure which flange type to specify? Our application engineers can confirm the correct variant based on your motor model and machine drawings. For applications requiring ≤5 arcmin backlash with IP65 sealed protection, consider upgrading to our EP-PBL/PBF high precision planetary gearbox.

Gear Ratio & Stage Configuration

The EP-PL/PF precision planetary gearbox is available in one-stage, two-stage, and three-stage configurations. Adding stages to the planetary reducer extends the available ratio range but reduces overall efficiency and increases axial length. The chart below illustrates the trade-offs across each planetary gearbox stage configuration.

RATIO RANGE & EFFICIENCY BY STAGE

Noise ≤58 dB(A)
1-STAGE

9–64
Ratio Range

Ratio Range
η ≥ 90%
Noise ≤65 dB(A)
3-STAGE

Taller bar = wider ratio range. Darker shade = higher mechanical efficiency. Select the minimum number of stages that covers your required ratio.

As a general rule, single-stage planetary gearbox reductions (3:1 through 10:1) should be specified wherever the required ratio falls within this range, as they deliver the highest efficiency and lowest backlash accumulation. Two-stage planetary reducer units extend coverage to 64:1 with only a modest 2% efficiency reduction. Three-stage configurations are reserved for extreme reduction needs above 64:1, typically found in indexing mechanisms and very slow rotary actuators where a compact precision planetary gearbox is essential.

Application Industries

The EP-PL/PF precision planetary gearbox serves as the backbone of servo motion control across a wide range of manufacturing sectors. This inline planetary reducer combines compact dimensions, configurable ratios, and cost efficiency, making it the default choice for OEM machine builders looking to standardise their planetary gearbox drive-train platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ What is the difference between EP-PL and EP-PF planetary gearbox?
The EP-PL and EP-PF share identical internal gear trains, bearings, seals, and performance specifications. The only difference is the output flange geometry: EP-PL has a round bolt-circle flange suited for rotary applications, while EP-PF has a square corner-bolt flange preferred for linear-motion and rack-and-pinion installations. Select based on the mating interface of your machine frame or load mechanism.
▶ How do I select the correct EP-PL/PF frame size for my servo motor?
Frame selection is primarily determined by three factors: motor shaft diameter, required output torque, and motor power. Each frame covers a specific motor shaft range (Frame 60: 6–19 mm, Frame 80: 8–22 mm, Frame 120: 14–35 mm, Frame 160: 19–42 mm). Verify that your motor’s shaft diameter falls within the frame’s compatible range, then confirm the required output torque does not exceed the rated torque for your chosen ratio. Our engineers can confirm the selection within 24 hours if you send your motor model number to [email protected].
▶ Can the EP-PL/PF gearbox handle frequent reversing applications?
Yes. For applications with frequent CW/CCW reversals, specify the OP4 reinforcement integral hoop clamp coupling instead of the standard OP1. The OP4 coupling features a reinforced clamping structure specifically designed for the cyclic loading pattern of reversing duty. This is common in servo press drives, oscillating conveyors, and pick-and-place reciprocating axes.
▶ What is the maximum input speed for the EP-PL/PF series?
The EP-PL/PF series is rated for a maximum input speed of 3,000 rpm for continuous operation. Short-duration peak speeds up to 6,000 rpm are permissible on single-stage units during acceleration and deceleration phases. Noise levels and bearing temperatures should be monitored if sustained operation above 3,000 rpm is planned. For applications requiring higher sustained input speeds, consider the EP-HAB high rigidity planetary gearbox series which offers enhanced bearing capacity and torsional stiffness.
▶ Does Korea Ever-Power offer custom shaft and coupling configurations?
Yes. The EP-PL/PF series supports six input coupling types: OP1 (integral hoop clamp, standard), OP2 (split type hoop clamp), OP3 (integral with keyway), OP4 (reinforced for frequent reversing), OP5 (keyway only), and OP6 (custom adaptor). Output shafts are available in S1 (smooth), S2 (keyed), and T (custom specification). Contact our engineering team with your motor model and load requirements for a tailored recommendation.
▶ How does the EP-PL/PF compare to the EP-PBL/PBF high precision series?
The EP-PL/PF delivers ≤8 arcmin backlash (P1 grade) with IP54 protection, while the EP-PBL/PBF achieves ≤5 arcmin with IP65 sealing. Internal gear quality, bearing class, and torsional stiffness are also upgraded in the PBL/PBF series. If your application tolerates ≤8 arcmin and does not require washdown or dust-proof protection, the EP-PL/PF offers significant cost savings. For semiconductor, laser, or medical applications where ≤5 arcmin and environmental sealing are mandatory, the EP-PBL/PBF high precision planetary gearbox is the recommended upgrade path.
