When to Choose the EP-FABR Over the EP-FAB
EP-FAB — Inline Output
Motor shaft and load shaft share the same centreline. Compact in the axial direction. Standard choice for most CNC, robot, and gantry applications.
EP-FABR — 90° Bevel Output
Motor axis is perpendicular to the load shaft. Reduces machine width, enables corner-mounted drives, and allows motor to be tucked behind the load axis plane.
The EP-FABR Series is built on the same proven planetary gearbox platform as the EP-FAB. The internal ring gear, planet gears, and carrier assembly are identical — a high-precision bevel gear set is added at the output end to redirect the torque 90°. This architecture means the EP-FABR delivers:
- ◆Identical motor adapter compatibility — same C1–C10 clamp ring system as EP-FAB
- ◆Ratios up to 200:1 in two stages — no additional gearbox stage needed
- ◆NYOGEL 792D lifetime grease — same sealed-for-life maintenance profile
- ◆IP65 protection — identical ingress protection to the inline EP-FAB
- ◆Any mounting direction — output shaft can point in any of four 90° orientations

EP-FABR shares frame dimensions with EP-FAB — easy design swap

Backlash Grade Comparison — P0 / P1 / P2
The bevel output stage adds a small increment to backlash compared to the inline EP-FAB. The table below shows the EP-FABR grades; for applications requiring the absolute lowest backlash, the inline EP-FAB is the better choice.
| Grade | 1-Stage | 2-Stage | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| P0 Ultra-Precision | ≤2 arc-min | ≤4 arc-min | 5-axis machining rotary tables, high-accuracy right-angle robot joints |
| P1 Precision | ≤4 arc-min | ≤7 arc-min | CNC right-angle axes, servo-driven conveyors, most industrial robot wrist joints |
| P2 Standard | ≤6 arc-min | ≤9 arc-min | General automation, packaging right-angle drives, cost-sensitive applications |
Engineering Features
90° Bevel Output Stage
Precision spiral bevel gears redirect output torque 90° from the motor axis. The bevel set is matched and lapped as a pair, minimising backlash and noise at the output interface.
Profile-Ground Planetary Internals
Same DIN 5 profile-ground helical planet gears and ring gear as the EP-FAB inline. Identical gear quality ensures equivalent torque density and service life.
200:1 in Two Stages
Two-stage EP-FABR reaches i=200 in a single unit. Available ratios: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200.
Same Motor Adapter System
Identical C1–C10 clamp-ring adapters as the EP-FAB. Any motor validated on the EP-FAB inline mounts directly to the EP-FABR without modification.
IP65 Full Sealing
Both the planetary stage and bevel housing are fully sealed to IP65. Suitable for coolant mist and washdown environments in food processing and machining.
4-Position Output Orientation
The bevel output housing can be oriented in four 90° positions to point the output shaft in any required direction relative to the motor, without modifying the gearbox internals.
Motor Assembly & Installation Notes
The EP-FABR uses the same clamp-ring motor adapter assembly process as the EP-FAB inline. The eight assembly steps — surface cleaning, adapter plate removal, shaft key management, bushing installation, hand-tighten, cross-torque, clamp torque, stop-pin — are identical. Two additional considerations apply specifically to the right-angle configuration:
Before final assembly, confirm the bevel output housing is rotated to the correct 90° position for your machine layout. The housing is secured by four bolts and can be repositioned at any point before the stop-pin is tightened.
When the bevel output shaft points downward, verify that the shaft end does not contact a lower machine surface after thermal expansion. Allow a minimum 2 mm axial clearance at the output shaft tip at maximum operating temperature.
S1 (round smooth shaft) is standard for flexible couplings. S2 (splined/clamp) is available for rigid or zero-backlash couplings. For right-angle gantry axes, S1 with a bellows coupling is the most common installation.

Manufacturing Quality

Every EP-FABR unit goes through the same five-stage quality process as the EP-FAB, with one additional bevel-specific check:
- ◆DIN 5 profile grinding — ring gear and planet gears, same as EP-FAB inline
- ◆CMM housing inspection — bore alignment verified before bevel stage assembly
- ◆Bevel contact pattern verification — tooth contact pattern is checked with marking compound after assembly; units outside the specified contact zone are reworked
- ◆Loaded noise test — bevel stage contributes additional noise; units exceeding ≤61–74 dB(A) limits are rejected
- ◆Backlash measurement and grade stamping — P0/P1/P2 stamped on nameplate after individual verification
- ◆IP65 pneumatic seal test — bevel housing output seal pressure-tested separately from planetary housing
Primary Application Areas
Right-Angle CNC Axes
B-axis or A-axis rotary drives on trunnion-type 5-axis machining centers where the servo must be tucked laterally behind the tilting axis.
Robot Wrist Joints
Axes 5 and 6 on articulated robots where the drive axis is perpendicular to the wrist output. Compact envelope and high ratio in a single stage reduces link weight.
Corner-Drive Conveyors
Servo-driven roller tables and corner transfer conveyors in automotive and e-commerce logistics. High ratio (up to 200:1) eliminates a separate reduction stage.
Winding & Unwinding Machines
Film, foil, and wire winders where the tension servo motor is mounted at 90° to the mandrel axis. Two-stage EP-FABR120–EP-FABR200 covers most winding duty cycles.
Food & Beverage Processing
Filling machine carousels, capping heads, and labelling turntables. IP65 + NYOGEL 792D withstand high-pressure washdown without lubrication maintenance.
EV & Battery Assembly Lines
Module stacking robots and cell handling gantries where servo motors are folded behind the axis to minimise the robot arm cross-section inside the battery tray.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Engineers Say About the EP-FABR Series
Feedback from machine builders and system integrators using EP-FABR right-angle gearboxes.
We redesigned our trunnion-type 5-axis machining center B-axis with the EP-FABR115-P0. The right-angle output let us fold the servo behind the tilting axis and reduce the head assembly width by 80 mm — a major advantage for machining aluminium structural parts. Backlash at P0 (≤2 arc-min) was within our tolerance for the B-axis positioning spec.
"Deployed EP-FABR090-P1 on axis 5 of a collaborative robot prototype. The 4-position output housing reorientation feature let us iterate the wrist layout three times without replacing the gearbox — saved significant re-engineering cost."
"We needed i=160 right-angle with P1 accuracy for a servo-driven carousel in our canning line. EP-FABR180 two-stage at i=160 was a single-unit solution — no tandem gearbox needed. Motor adapter fit our Mitsubishi HG-SR153 directly."
"The bevel housing reorientation is a genuine differentiator. On our EV battery module assembly line, we changed the output direction four times during the machine design phase without ever ordering a different gearbox. That kind of flexibility is worth real money in a fast-moving product programme."
"After evaluating three European right-angle servo gearboxes and the EP-FABR, we selected the EP-FABR142 for our corner-drive conveyor upgrade. Backlash at P1 (≤4 arc-min) exceeded our positioning spec, and the unit cost was 30% lower. Six months in, zero issues."
